Study Groups

For many university courses, cooperative learning in a study group can enhance learning and motivation. Research at UVic demonstrated that students who had weekly study group sessions performed significantly better on examinations in Biology 150 and Psychology 100. The sessions were semi-structured. Students prepared individually in advance, reading the course materials and attending lectures. They also prepared "study questions" on the week's content. At the sessions students compiled their study questions into a quiz, and then answered the questions. This was followed by a discussion. Students not only got higher marks than a control group, they reported more consistent studying and higher interest in the course as a result of the group activities.

Students taking a common course are encouraged to contact the staff of the Learning Skills Program in order to set up periodic group study sessions. Assistance is provided in arranging study groups, developing group-study methods, and finding space on campus (first-come/first-served). Students should inquire at the information desk, Counselling Services.
